1st, a few qs about recent thingies... Superstition: right. Ive now got a friends copy of Lieb's LSG 'fragile' ep on this label. It seems OK, but not essential; however, I heard a tune from the LSG 'Blueprint' ep, also on superstition. This *was* excellent. Any details on this - ie its age - is it out now? I saw a 2lp pack complition from the Superstit label - apparently this is ok, but not bollock blowing. Listened to another tune on same label (forgot title) and same applies to this (nice to note it was at uk price even though it was imported though). New tunes i got recently: (sorry, i'd like to review them all 'properly' but really havent got time - so ill just try and recommend the good 'uns. No actually, they're all good - thats why i bought them. take your pick). AI II - we've all heard about this now, but i'd like to add that I really like the bonus track on the limited 12 by K. Larkin - def. worth purchasing the ltd copy. Pyrex Detox ep [sabrettes] - good ep. percussive techno with some similarity to the harder tunes recently coming from GPR. recommended. Lagowski - europa reprised ep (feat YO3 / B.Hannant) [GPR] 2 mental tracks on the b side, sound like youve put a 33 on 45, but then you notice its on 33. hmm . really nice hardish techno twidller on A side. Check this out. Cranium HF - summer rain ep. [Sapho], clear vinyl This is Crainium HF (= Head Fuck !) produced/remixed by Caspar Pound and Loz Elliot-Potter ( = FLF). The 'head' side qualifies as IDM, nice and slow groove with analogue line, and filtered/ phased low level guitar + vocal. The 'fuck' (excuse me!) side is the same idea, but harder and faster - similar to Sheep on Drugs recent stuff, may be a bit closer to Harthouse style. Again, I think this record has potential. Recommended. Quarknosis - Double Comp. LP [Kinetix] Good compl. lp of stuff from this label, mostly slow melodic techno numbers (= idm, no question). General oppinion is that it is good 2lp, and I'd agree! Mo Wax - Royalties Overdue [Mo Wax] For those of you who havent heard of this label b4, its a UK acid Jazz style label, with an experimental edge. Some of their stuff has a greater leaning toward other styles such as Hip-Hop, Dub, and Techno. This lp (ltd Coloured vinyl / or CD) is a compilation of their back catalogue, and has some nice tracks on it. I much prefer the tracks with hip-hop beats, worht getting for these. the majority of the tracks however, are more jazzy - good if you like this style. Beastie Boys - Ill Communications I snapped this up sharpish, because it appears to be on very ltd. vinyl. Since when have the beasties been idm i hear you ask.. Dunno, but i'd say now, because this a top lp. Much more mature/ witty than the stuff i heard as a teenager, and good instrumental tunes too. Iration Steppas - Scud Missile [iration steppas 001] Storming dub tune with techno overtones. Unlike the more usual such tunes, this comes firmly from the roots dub side, rather than being techno boys whacking on a b-line. The suprising thing is that it trots along at a healthy 142 bpm ! Dub FX galore. Search out. Cenrty Meets The Music Family - 'Release the Chains' [Conscious Sounds] Bassline of the year award. no messing. 4 (similar) mixes of an instrumental dub stormer (apparently from forthcoming lp). The record is 99% rumbling sub bass, and 1% driving top end. Some mixes have low key snatches of horns / guitar. Essential. Enjoy! Mail me for further details if you like... Cheers, Chris Giles.
